6 Reasons Why Preschool Is Good for Your Child

When you contemplate sending your child to preschool, what comes to mind? Do you worry that your little one might be too young for such a structured setting? Are you concerned about how they’ll handle being away from you?

Put those fears aside. Preschool is beneficial for your child.

In preschool, kids not only get introduced to basic concepts like numbers, letters, and shapes but more crucially, they hone their social and emotional abilities. They learn to interact with peers, share, and collaborate.

Research indicates that kids who attend top-notch preschools start regular school with advanced pre-reading abilities, a more extensive vocabulary, and enhanced math skills compared to their peers who didn’t attend preschool. So, why hesitate about preschool when it’s clearly advantageous for your child?

Understand this: kids aged 3-6 are incredibly receptive. They absorb more than we often give them credit for. As parents, it’s our duty to harness this period and arm our youngsters with essential life skills. While teaching your kids at home during this phase might offer them an academic advantage (ONLY if you’re trained in early childhood education), it might not cater to their social and emotional growth, which is vital for their overall development. This growth is best achieved when kids mingle with their age-mates.

Here’s a list of 6 compelling reasons why preschool is a wise choice for your child:

1. Preschool lays the groundwork for both academic and social learning.

Youngsters are inherently inquisitive and keen observers. They’re eager to master skills that they see valued by their family and society — like reading a toy’s assembly manual or choosing the right money for a transaction. To equip kids for school’s academic challenges, educators provide a range of fun games and tasks that foster not just academic, but also social competencies.

2. Preschool offers children a chance to experience a structured environment.

In preschool, children get to be in a setting with defined routines, guided by teachers and surrounded by peers. Here, they learn the importance of sharing, adhering to guidelines, signaling when they have a query, waiting their turn, and understanding that they are part of a community where everyone seeks the teacher’s attention. Such group interactions are essential for every child before embarking on their formal schooling journey.

3. Preschool sets the stage for the more academic environment of elementary school.

There’s no need to worry that emphasizing early math and literacy skills will rush your child’s growth. Such foundational skills won’t compromise the essential playtime every child needs. Top-tier early childhood education strikes a balance between both. These curriculums are crafted around the concept of learning via play, ensuring that your child’s educational journey is enjoyable and engaging.

4. Preschool fosters social and emotional growth in your child.

At preschool, your child will navigate the intricacies of compromise, cultivate respect for others, and hone problem-solving skills. It’s a nurturing environment where they can establish their identity, engage in exploration, interact with peers, and bolster their self-confidence. In this setting, children often realize their potential, learning to accomplish tasks independently without always seeking a parent’s intervention. From simple activities like pouring their own drink and assisting in setting up for snacks to more significant tasks like deciding how they want to utilize their leisure time, preschool empowers them to take significant strides in their development. Isn’t that a wonderful progression for them?

5. Preschool equips your child to satisfy their innate curiosity.

It’s undeniable that 4 and 5-year-olds are brimming with intriguing questions about their surroundings, posing queries like, “Where does the water go after it rains?” or “Do birds have fun?” As parents, we might sometimes be stumped by their inquisitiveness, but preschool is there to assist. It encourages children to seek answers through exploration, hands-on experiments, and engaging discussions.

6. Your child will grasp the basics of letters and numbers.

In preschool, children are introduced to alphabets and numerals, but it’s done in a playful, pressure-free manner. Instead of formal instruction, preschools employ activities that kids find captivating, such as storytelling, discussing celestial bodies, or playing with building blocks. For instance, to enhance language skills and lay the foundation for reading, teachers engage kids in rhyme games and encourage them to narrate tales. To instill basic math concepts, they might ask children to count snacks, use a calendar for counting down to an anticipated event, or play memory-enhancing games.

Remember, at this age, preschool is more about enjoyment and developing interpersonal skills rather than hitting academic targets. The focus is on nurturing creativity and fostering well-rounded individuals, not necessarily on reading by age 4 or mastering multiplication by 5, though some might.

Moreover, the learning doesn’t halt when they leave preschool. They’ll return home bursting with tales to share and questions to pose.

Ways to nurture their emotional and social growth at home:

    • When they’re upset, sit with them, delve into their feelings, and discuss the day’s events. Discuss both past experiences and anticipate future ones, exploring their reactions and plans.
    • Engage in problem-solving exercises. For instance, read interactive stories like “Twiggle the Turtle,” where Twiggle retreats into his shell when agitated, takes a moment to breathe, and then communicates his feelings. Emulate this approach with your child and motivate them to adopt similar strategies for self-regulation.
    • Embrace the timeless advice: indulge in reading. Read to them and let them read to you. Engaging in interactive reading is pivotal for linguistic growth.
